Station # 4 - Jesus Talks To The Women Of Jerusalem
Read: Luke 23: 27-31
Reflect: These words of Jesus might sound strange but they’re in fact an invitation. These women are crying for Jesus, but Jesus tells them that they should really be crying for themselves. His words are a call to repentance.
In the days leading up to Easter, we enter into the suffering of Jesus and are encouraged to mourn for the suffering he experienced. But we should be weeping for ourselves too. Lyrics from “How Deep The Father’s Love For Us” sums it up well - “It was my sin that held him there”. It was our choice to turn away from God and live lives separate from him that has Jesus walking this path to Golgotha with the cross on his back.
We aren’t well practiced at facing the consequences of our actions. We don’t like to feel guilt. But Jesus’ words are an invitation to do just that. After all, we cannot know the true hope of Jesus’ death and resurrection if we do not really understand the true depth of our sin.
Today, can you take Jesus’ up on his invitation to weep over your own sin and brokenness?
Pray: Lord Jesus, thank you for your invitation to consider my brokenness, and how desperately I need you. I know I have turned from your goodness and chosen to go my own way. With kindness and gentleness, please show me where I have caused harm to you, to others, and to myself; make me aware of how my selfish desires have led me into death and darkness. Thank you for your willingness to face the consequences of my sin yourself, for experiencing what should have been mine to experience. Amen.
